Lewis' Map of England and WalesS. Lewis & Company of London
Lewis' Map of England and Wales - N.W. Division - published by S. Lewis & Company of London, England, circa 1840. This is a folded map that's bound in a red Morocco leather cover with gilt embossing to the boards and spine. The map is dissected into 35 sections and laid on linen. Originally, this was one piece of a huge four-part map made by Lewis. This particular part (the N.W. division) includes a large engraved view of the General Post Office in London. The coverage is the Isle of Man, Wales from just north of Harlech and the NW coast of England as far eastwards to include the whole of Manchester. To see how this part fits into the overall map, please visit http://mapco.net/lewis/lewis.htm.
- The map measures about 41.5" tall by 35" wide.
- The map is made of paper, laid on linen.
- Published in London, England - circa 1840.
- Part of our Estate Collection and in very good vintage condition. The map itself is a little yellowed from age, but we couldn't find any rips or repairs. The leather cover has some separation at the spine, especially toward the top (please see photo). There are also some scrapes and scratches in the leather, along with worn edges and corners. There is a sticker in the front cover with the name of a previous owner (Greenville Newton Temple). Overall though, it's in nice condition for its age.
