This is an interesting piece... We think it's had a few different lives. On the outside it's a combination of some antique embossed metal, and parts of a Standard Oil can. On the inside it's wood. It's a hand-made piece made of repurposed materials, including an antique lock that's been added to give it a great old look. The lock and the embossed metal probably date back to the 1800s, but the inside is more like mid to late 1900s. And to make it more interesting, on the back is the piece of Standard Oil can. It's from Standard Oil of New York, so that's pre-1931. So our best guess is that this was put together in the mid to late 1900s using some pretty old parts (other than the wood). But it has the look of a box from the early 1800s or even earlier! We think it's a really nice and unique item. Whoever put it together did a nice job. It feels sturdy and looks like an old English chest. And it's a great size... not too big, not too small. Great functional item that would look great as a display piece.

Details:

  • Measures about 16" wide, 10" deep, and 6" tall.
  • Made of wood and metal.

Condition:

  • Part of our Estate Collection and in very good vintage condition. The embossed metal appears to have some significant age and has areas where it's worn thin or even cracked (please see photo). The finish on the metal is also worn and has minor rust. The wood is in good shape, but does have an age crack. The embossed metal was attached using nails, and there are a few ares on the interior of the lid where the nails have come through the wood a bit. It doesn't impact usage, just something to be aware of. The lock also appears to have some significant age. It looks very nice, but we don't have the key, so it's not functional.
